What happened
The Sunoco & Halfmoon Car Wash in Halfmoon, Saratoga County — about 15 miles north of Albany — ran a “dance for a discount” promotion: customers who busted out a dance move at the register got 20% off. A sign by the till read, roughly, “Want a discount? Show us your best dance moves.”
The idea came from Paulina Sirtori, the station's 23-year-old social media manager. Her reasoning, as reported by Upworthy: the number-one complaint she heard was that gas prices were too high. Fuel was expensive that summer — FOX 5 New York put the New York average around $4.15 a gallon.
Why it went viral
- Real people, zero choreography. Construction workers, commuters and retirees doing whatever move they had — The Washington Post quoted a 66-year-old customer who was happy it made people laugh.
- A relatable problem. High gas prices plus a small, silly fix is perfect short-video material.
- Huge reach. The Post reported the station's video passed 6 million views; Upworthy put the total near 10 million across platforms. CNN, FOX 5 and others picked it up.
Gas stations keep turning into dance floors
The discount is one of several reasons “gas station dance” trends online. Petrol attendants dancing with customers are a recurring viral format in South Africa, groups filming routines on empty forecourts are a TikTok staple, and in 2026 the look became an AI template: the Gas Station Dance AI trend — a 15-second golden-hour edit with a forecourt dance, a walking selfie and someone stepping out of a car.
Make your own gas station dance video
No discount here, sorry — but no dancing either. Upload 1–3 photos and get the three-shot sunset video, ready for TikTok and Reels. Start at the pump, or read how the AI trend works.
